The Kinnison bloodline plays an important role for Civilization, since it was carefully bred over millennia by the Arisians to produce a race of super-beings that would ultimately supplant the Arisians themselves.

All of this makes for an agitating read full of overstimulus, like overdosing on cocaine or deciding, against all better judgement, that you should take the plunge off the 3 story tall water slide only to find that it wasn’t such a good idea just as your butt clears the drop. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster-than-light travel.

Metal objects don’t simply disappear – they glow, melt, and even evaporate if the beam is powerful enough. Considering what Nadreck is likethis makes him frightening indeed.

After absorbing the fleets, the Nevian ship goes on to the Earth and the same action is taken against the city of Pittsburgh before the ship heads for home.

Subverted by a number of characters who believe that they are immune to mind control but learn differently. Even a Second and on occasion a Third Stage Lensman is advised to wear it when a maximum effort is required.

I plan to read more of the series, not least because I have the whole stack sitting on my shelf at home, but I didn’t feel as if this was a great introduction. Smith was reportedly delighted to be called on this, because it meant his fans were paying attention. The Corps’ creators deny this, although later they made amends by adding GLs named after elements of Lensman.

One of the first signs that Helmuth is not your run-of-the-mill pulp villain is the fact that he refuses to take Kinnison’s apparent death at face value and explicitly commands his underlings to look for the body to verify. This gave us stuff like “Triplanetary”, “First Lensman”, etc. And I don’t much. On this job I can recognize nothing of good triplandtary, of courtesy, of chivalry, or even of ordinary common decency.

And, it more or less succeeds, with each action-packed pulpy misadventure trying its darnedest to be more thrilling than the last. That you may learn and appreciate that fact is one reason why you are living at this present moment. Kimball Kinnison and Clarissa MacDougall’s first meeting produces some real fireworks, complete with mutual insults and name-calling.

Or perhaps Heinlein would call him un sane.

Naturally, I assumed the preceding books in the series were written before Again, though, the Lensman series is not about credibility. Justified by Kinnison’s frustration level — he knows perfectly well that he was injured by being an idiot. He did an adequate job. Clothes Make the Superman: It’s triplqnetary badly written too.

After all, there is quite bit of action, ray-guns and pretty good aliens. It is also explained that Gharlane had previously disguised himself as Nero. A few human races are the opposite, as well, with clothing rules that cover everything, like the Tomingans.
