Gorey’s love of silent films and the book has a cinematic feel to it, both in the story telling and the illustrations. Gorey pulls out all the stops and produces intricate drawings that are densely detailed. Refresh and try again. Am going to read some of his other works.
The following two are from The Fatal Lozengeanother of Gorey’s alphabetical catalogs — in this case, the object of each panel is the letter that progresses alphabetically “Orphan” and “Zouave”.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. Check out the top books of the year on our page Best Books of I was able to find the card in The Gilded Bat. A wonderfully macabre take on A Little Princess.
What is even more fun for me is that I have the piece of original artwork from The Broken Spoke with the calling card from that book! In some ways, our culture has become much more permissive since Gashleycrumb was written in the early 60s; but these days unspeakable things happening to children seems chold rarely-crossed hpaless.

Remembering that artwork in his published books is reproduced life size to his original drawings, it is no small feat that Gorey was able to put so many details into each image.
I am happy to have someone commenting! I found it in the children’s section of the library, but this is just too much. The family layer ships her off to boarding school where she punished by teachers and bullied by fellow classmates. The Hapless Child was included in Amphigorey and is currently in print and available as an individual book.
Here, let me tell you a little story about poor Charlotte Sophia. One of his step-mothers was Corinna Mura, a cabaret singer who had a brief role in the classic film Casablanca.
